Opening Fukushima floodgates: Modelling 137Cs impact in marine biota

نویسندگان

چکیده

A numerical model was applied to simulate the transport of 137Cs released with waters which were used cool Fukushima reactors. These stored will be Pacific Ocean according Japanese government plans. The radionuclide is Lagrangian and includes interactions sediments an integrated dynamic foodweb for biota uptake. Calculations made from a conservative approach indicate that expected concentrations in marine fish would orders magnitude below those detected after accident also lower than resulting global fallout background.

Introduced marine biota in Western Australian waters

An annotated compendium is presented of 102 species of marine algae and animals that have been reported as introduced into Western Australian marine and estuarine waters, four of which arc on the Australian national list of targeted marine pest species, For each species the authority, distribution (both in Western Australia and elsewhere), voucher specimen(s) and remarks are given, Sixty specie...

Evaluation of radiation doses and associated risk from the Fukushima nuclear accident to marine biota and human consumers of seafood.

Radioactive isotopes originating from the damaged Fukushima nuclear reactor in Japan following the earthquake and tsunami in March 2011 were found in resident marine animals and in migratory Pacific bluefin tuna (PBFT). Publication of this information resulted in a worldwide response that caused public anxiety and concern, although PBFT captured off California in August 2011 contained activity ...

Marine Biota and Psychological Well-Being

Exposure to natural environments can have calming and stress-reducing effects on humans. Moreover, previous studies suggest that these benefits may be greater in areas with higher species richness. Our study took advantage of a “natural experiment” to examine people’s behavioral, physiological, and psychological reactions to increases in levels of marine biota in a large aquarium exhibit during...

137Cs in soil and fallout around Zagreb (Croatia) at the time of the Fukushima accident.

This paper addresses the noticeable increase of 137Cs activity concentrations in soil and fallout in the area surrounding Zagreb (Croatia) that occurred at the time of the 2011 Fukushima accident. This topic is important for public health as 137Cs is highly toxic due to its long half-life of radioactive decay and chemical similarity to potassium. 137Cs concentrations in fallout were much greate...

Fukushima 137Cs at the base of planktonic food webs off Japan

The potential bioaccumulation of Cs in marine food webs off Japan became a concern following the release of radioactive contaminants from the damaged Fukushima nuclear power plant into the coastal ocean. Previous studies suggest that Cs activities increase with trophic level in pelagic food webs, however, the bioaccumulation of Cs from seawater to primary producers, to zooplankton has not been ...
